How do possible materials such as films, liquid films, chlorinated rubber and fiber composite compare?
Especially in terms of strength and long-term durability, a GRP coating is the best! In addition to GRP coatings, there are various films or coatings (liquid films) to choose from. On closer inspection, however, the GRP coating crystallises out as very advantageous.
While the tensile strength of conventional films and coatings is less than 20N/mm², pure glass fabrics have values between 1800 and 5000N/m²! In addition, a GRP coating can be adapted and processed according to the geometry. There is no need for time-consuming welding (as is necessary with some films, for example)! Many films and coatings (such as chlorinated rubber) also often contain plasticisers which "migrate" over time and lead to massive embrittlement.

What structure do we recommend?
Due to the maximum permanent water resistance and at the same time excellent processing properties, quite clearly: epoxy resins from HP-Textiles! Our system build-up consists of an epoxy primer, the actual laminate and the coloured top layer..
The HP-E80FS primer is applied to the substrate and acts as a moisture barrier and adhesion promoter. The laminate can be built up on top of this (directly "wet-on-wet"). This consists of a glass-fabric, which is impregnated in layers with the laminating resin HP-E30TLS. The resulting composite material is extremely strong and more resistant to permanent water than a polyester laminate.
Finally, a special epoxy topcoat HP-E30TDS is rolled onto the laminate. This top coat is available in various colour shades and results in maximum permanent water resistance.

Epoxy or polyester resin, which is the better system?
Polyester laminates are good and inexpensive. However, if you want maximum quality with minimum effort, you should decide for an epoxy coating! Conventionally, polyester resins have often been used. These are processed together with glass fabric mats or layers and then form the glass reinforced plastic (in short: GRP). A GRP coating is extremely robust and durable. Polyester resins contain the monomer styrene, which provides a very strong odour during processing. In addition, polyester resins must never be processed under direct sunlight.
Since it can be quite costly to shade larger objects in particular, HP-Textiles has developed a higher-quality alternative in recent years: Our epoxy system for roof, pond and pool coatings. The epoxy resins can be processed under direct sunlight, and they are also completely free of styrene, which also makes it possible to coat directly on many insulation boards, for example. In addition, epoxy resins have an extremely low shrinkage. With conventional polyester resins, this amounts up to 8 vol.% and thus creates considerable stresses in the laminate. In order to enable processing on site, we also offer the epoxy resin systems in container units that are already matched to each other in terms of the mixing ratio.
On site, simply open the bucket with the resin component, add the smaller hardener container and stir. This completely eliminates the need for time-consuming weighing of the individual components! The biggest advantage of epoxy resins, however, is their significantly higher resistance. Epoxy resins have a much better resistance to hydrolysis (permanent water resistance) than polyester resins. What has long been known in boat building can now also be used for roof or pool coatings!
polyester resins - the main characteristics:
- odour-intensive (during processing), should therefore not be processed indoors
- must not be used under direct sunlight (sun protection required)
+ easy dosage of partial quantities
+ low price
➤ CONCLUSION: good price-performance ratio
epoxy resins - the main characteristics:
+ solvent-free, therefore applicable e.g. on Styrodur©
+ can be processed under sunlight without any problems
+ good adhesion even on "difficult" substrates (e.g. renovations, metal,...)
+ high permanent water resistance (chemical and osmosis protection)
+ can also be applied "indoors" (swimming pools, holding tanks,...)!
➤ CONCLUSION: highest qualitys and user-friendly processing; particularly popular with professional users!

Where are the differences in terms of processing and strength?
Glass fabric mats are significantly stronger with lower resin consumption! ! Glass fabric mats are cut, non-oriented E-glass threads that are fixed with a powder connector. This powder connector is dissolved by the styrene contained in the polyester resin and thus increases the drapability, i.e. the property of being able to lay the material around rounds.
Our glass fabric mats are basically multicompatible. This means that they can be processed with polyester, vinyl ester AND epoxy resins. Since epoxy resin does not contain styrene, the glass fabric mats remain largely rigid, which makes the use of a so-called glass fabric more useful. At the latest with the advent of the rotor blade industry, glass fabrics have found their place on the market. Here, the individual glass fabric strands are not cut into small pieces, but are specifically oriented and fixed in layers.
The result is a reinforcing material with clear advantages over a conventional mat:
- much higher tensile strength
- no short fabrics flying around, as is the case with glass fabric mats
- much lower resin consumption (often less than half!)
- easy processing with polyester, vinylester or epoxy resins possible
Under no circumstances should so-called emulsion-bonded glass fabric mats be used! This type of binder is based on polyvinyl acetate, which, compared to powder-bonded glass fabric mats, leads to significantly lower water resistance! Glass fabric mats do not contain any binders and thus offer the pure reinforcing effect - without any side effects!

How high is the colour fastness of epoxy topcoats (final coats)?
Epoxy topcoats offer a significantly higher permanent water resistance than polyester topcoats! Above the waterline, there may be a slight change in colour (depending on the colour shade), but this has no influence on the function of the coating! Almost all surfaces (lacquers, woods, plastics, etc.) show certain colour changes under the influence of weather.
The same applies to epoxy or polyester topcoats. For a long time, polyester topcoats were considered superior and more resistant to UV and light, but epoxy chemistry has also evolved. High-quality, low-yellowing ingredients and special uv stabilisers now lead to improved colour fastness of epoxy topcoats. Basically, this is influenced by the interaction of several factors, for example by sunlight, the temperature, the salt content and the fluctuation of the salt content.

How does the topcoat react to chlorine and salt water?
The epoxy resin shows its advantages especially in the case of increased requirements due to heat and chlorinated water (or even chemicals!)! Our epoxy resins have been used for many years as chemical protection coatings and for coatings on (chemical) tanks. In addition, the material has proven itself as a corrosion protection coating for metals - even under the most difficult conditions, such as in the offshore sector. Constant chlorine and salt media are no problem for the resistance. It is important to ensure that the temperature, pH value and / or salt content are not subject to major fluctuations.
processing
What must the ideal substrate be like?
All substrates must be load-bearing, free of loose particles and, of course, free of oil and grease. Solid, mineral, slightly porous substrates (e.g. masonry, concrete, plaster, screed, wood, etc.) are ideal. Existing GRP pools can also be renovated (see section "Renovation"). In some cases (e.g. indoor ponds or holding ponds), other materials such as plastic or insulation panels may also be considered. Further details can also be found in our processing instructions.
Do you offer instructions for coating?
Yes, of course! You will receive our detailed instructions for pool coating with your delivery. This comprises a total of 16 pages with over 50 pictures and sketches of the individual construction stages and materials. You can also download the instructions here in advance.
Can the coating be applied directly to the ground?
We clearly advise against a direct coating on the ground! A durable coating requires a sufficiently stable substrate. In addition, without this substrate, the primer is limited in its function. See also: "What must the ideal substrate like? “
Can I also coat on pond liners?
In principle, this is possible. However, it should be noted that pond liners are usually made of PE, PVC or EPDM and do not form a permanent adhesive bond with the primer. In addition, pond liners often form many folds or at least adhesive edges, so that there is no even substrate for coatings. In general, we recommend removing the liner completely and replacing it with a stable, mineral substrate (masonry, concrete, plaster, etc.). Only in this way, the system structure, consisting of primer, laminate and top layer, show off all its existing advantages!
I would like to renovate an old pool. What do I have to consider here? How is the construction carried out?
The exact structure of a renovation depends, of course, on the current condition and the material on the surface. In order to build up a long-term durable coating, more and more objects are being renovated with epoxy resins. Whether blistered liquid foil, faulty polyester laminate or simply a colour refreshment - renovation projects should always be discussed individually. For this purpose, you are welcome to contact our technical advisors directly (+49 (0) 5905 945 98 70), we will then submit you an individual offer for your project!
compatibility
What about compatibility with living creatures, especially delicate fish?
Our system coatings have been successfully used for many years for the coating of ponds, breeding / caging tanks and aquariums. We already act with the necessary care when selecting the raw materials for our products. Thus, ingredients are selected according to the principle: "What is not added to the product cannot be released into the environment!" The raw materials of the systems are only based on ingredients that have been tested for suitability in long-term tests. The systems can therefore be classified as harmless after curing if the processing instructions are complied.
